1. Skateboarding emerged among Californian surfers in the late 1930s and early 1950s. The first skateboards were boxes with attached wheels, later they were replaced by boards made of compressed layers of wood – similar to those used today.
2. 1980 Birth of the NSA (National Skateboard Association). The National Skateboarding Association was founded by Frank Hawk (this is the father of Tony Hawk), whose devotion to his son and skateboarding is well known. The NSA has helped launch such greats as: Jeff Phillips, Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Christian Hosoi, Chris Miller, Neil Blender, Bill Danforth, Bill Tocco, Steve Steadham, Ray Underhill, Kevin Staab, Joe Johnson, Lance Mountain, Mike McGill , Rob Roskop, Lester Kasai, Alan Losi, Mickey Alba and many, many more.
3. In 2013, there are about 13,500,000 skateboarders on the streets of the United States. For comparison, in 1998 the number of skateboarders in the US was approximately 2,157,000.
4. 85% of all skateboarders are under the age of 18.
5. The most difficult trick in the history of skateboarding is the 900-degree jump, performed in 1999 by famed skater Tony Hawk. The highest jump in skateboarding is 5 meters, 5 millimeters, the longest is 16 meters, 11 centimeters.
6. The first skatepark in the world is Carlsbad Skatepark, in Carlsbad, California. It was designed by Jack Graham and John O’Malley in March 1976. According to other (more controversial) data, a park in Florida is considered the first public skatepark.
7. Skateboarding is the 3rd largest participating sport in the US. If we take the age of participants from 6-18 years, then skateboarding is the 2nd largest sport among the participants.
8. The popularity of skateboarding as a sport is breathtaking! Skateboarding is the 6th most popular sport in the world in terms of the number of people who take part in it. The state of California in the United States of America is one of the most popular destinations for skateboarders. More than half of all American skaters live in California.
